ISLAMABAD – The Shalimar police have officially registered a case against unidentified terrorists, including motorcyclists claiming affiliation with a banned militant outfit. This action was taken based on the issuance of life threats to a professor at the National Defense University (NDU), Prof. Dr. Husnul Amin, who is a renowned scholar, author of several books, and head of the peace and conflict studies department. His university-going daughter, as reported by informed sources on Monday, was also threatened by the militants. The First Information Report (FIR) has been filed under Section 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 25-D of the Telegraph Act against alleged members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), following a complaint lodged by Prof. Dr. Husnul Amin. In his formal complaint, the NDU professor revealed that he has been receiving threats from the banned militant group TTP through WhatsApp messages and letters over an extended period. Additionally, he reported incidents of unknown motorcyclists harassing and terrorizing his daughter, a student at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad.

The applicant conveyed to the police that he had previously faced life threats from the TTP when he organized multiple training camps for seminary teachers. He also mentioned the tragic loss of his friend, Dr. Farooq Khan, in a terrorist attack in Maran a few years ago, orchestrated by the Taliban. Expressing grave concern for his safety, Dr Husnul Amin urgently requested the police to take prompt action by registering a case against the militants associated with the banned outfit and apprehending them. Subsequently, the police have duly filed the case and initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.

President Prof. Dr Kaleemullah Bareech as well as the Secretary of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA), have expressed their concern over the life threats received by Prof. Dr. Husnul Amin and they demanded immediate action by the security forces and law enforcement agencies.

Prof. Amin’s academic journey has traversed diverse geographical and intellectual landscapes, contributing significantly to the broader discourse in his areas of expertise. Through his affiliations with institutions worldwide, he has achieved numerous accomplishments, specializing in social movement studies, religion and politics, conflict and peace studies, and contemporary Muslim intellectual thought movements. He obtained his PhD from the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Presently, he holds the position of Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at the National Defence University, Islamabad.

Before joining NDU, Dr Amin served as an Associate Professor of Politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations, alongside the role of Executive Director of the Iqbal International Institute for Research & Dialogue (IRD) at the International Islamic University Islamabad from 2016 to 2022. Recently, he was honoured with the Fulbright Visiting Research Fellowship (2019-20), jointly hosted by the South Asia Center, University of Pennsylvania, and Stockton University, NJ, United States. In addition to his academic roles, he has received postdoctoral fellowships, including the DRS-COFUND Excellence Fellowship of Freie University Berlin and the European Commission. His research stays include a period at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures & Societies (BGSMCS) in 2013-2014. I also availed a fellowship at William & Mary, Virginia, USA in January 2014, and a short-term research stay at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA in October 2015.

He has published research covering a spectrum of themes, including the politics of counterterrorism, de-radicalization, social movements, youth activism, neoliberalism and middle classes, and the policies of madrassa reforms. Moreover, I have had the privilege of supervising 15 PhD research projects and over 50 MPhil research studies. The diverse array of research projects undertaken by my students spans critical issues such as gender relations, horizontal inequalities and ethnic tensions, comparative politics, Islamic social movements, Islamism, and post-Islamism, and ethnopolitical conflicts, etc. Throughout my career, I have published 30 research papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals. His authored, edited, and co-edited books, numbering eight, include the notable work “Observing Variants of Post-Islamism: Intellectual Discourses and Social Movements.” Other major works encompass topics such as “An Islamic Case for Religious Freedom,” “Pakistan – Combating Terrorism: Policies, Discourse, and Strategies,” and “Dialogue with the West.” A well-cited publication is his research paper on “Post-Islamism in Pakistan,” and his recent papers, published by Routledge and Brill, cover themes such as targeted violence against the Hazara community in Afghanistan and Pashtun Neo ethnona9onalism and Peace education.
