The Peace and Education Foundation (PEF) condemned the recent mob attack on a church and the Christian community in Jaranwala, district Faisalabad. The attack, which took place on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, resulted in the burning of several churches and homes, as well as the forced evacuation of the Christian community.
The President of PEF said that “We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. Such acts of violence and intolerance are not only deplorable but also go against the principles of humanity, religious beliefs, Pakistani law, peace, and coexistence.
The PEF believes that every individual has the right to practice their faith freely and without fear, and it condemns any act that threatens this sacred right. The attack on the Christian community is not only an attack on Christian religious beliefs and institutions but also on the fundamental values of interfaith principals, Islam and Pakistani law that promises to protect all Pakistani citizens.
The PEF urges the authorities to take action to bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice. And also calls on the ulema to condemn such incidents and raise awareness in the public about the Pakistani Constitution and the importance of tolerance and respect for all religions. Pakistani Prime Minister and the President should make their priority to develop the appropriate and sustainable mechanisms to work with opinion, faith, political and community leaders to educate their followers in Religious Freedom and rights of all Pakistani citizens enshrined in the Constitution.
“At PEF, we are committed to promoting peace, interfaith tolerance, and education in our society,” said Hussain. “We extend our solidarity and support for the Christian community during this challenging time.”
